Hyundai Repair: timing belt, camshaft sprockets, proper alignment

Question
I want to know if theres a way to check the timing belt on my 02 santa fe with out removing it

Answer
If you're looking to check camshaft timing, it isn't necessary to remove the belt.  This can be done by removing the upper timing cover and verifying proper alignment of the camshaft sprockets when the crankshaft is at TDC.

If you're looking to inspect the condition of the belt itself, it'll look pretty much normal unless it's ready to fail right away.  In the latter case, the teeth will have cracks in them and will be in the process of breaking off the belt.  My advice is to replace the belt as specified in the maintenance guide.  It's very difficult to inspect frequently enough to be sure you catch a problem before the belt fails.
