Hyundai Repair: 2000 Elantra, hyundai emblem, valet mode

Question
I have a 2000 elantra that was bought used, the only key is the regular
relacement key no hyundai emblem. I had no idea that there was an alarm till I
had to mess with the door handles that would not open from the inside. On the
drivers side the handle on the inside was broken and did not pull on the rod to
open the door, the passenger side just had to be tweeked alittle to get it to
pull the rod enough to open the door.. While doing this with the radio on and
doors open, I drained the battery enough that the car would not start, when I
opened the door the alarm went off.
I charged the battery and found that with the key on if I disconnected the neg.
cable for a few seconds this would reset so the car would start.
My problem is when the car sits a few minutes and I open the door it makes the
alarm go off every time. how can I disable the alarm so I can use the car with
out unhooking the battery every time.

Answer
I was hoping this was going to be a newer car.  The 2000 Elantra didn't come with a factory alarm, so whatever is in your car is aftermarket.

It sounds like you may be doing this already, but in the case I misunderstand, try disconnecting the battery and reconnecting while the ignition is in the on postion.  This will often put an aftermarket alarm in an unarmed mode.  Unfortunately, some default to self-arming, which would put you back in the position you're already in.

Have a look around behind the passenger side of the dash.  Typically, alarm modules are installed in this area.  Look to see if there are wires going from that module to an added-on switch or button.  Many alarms can be put into valet mode (won't arm) by either flipping the switch or holding the button while the ignition is in the on position.

If there's a name on the alarm module, you could attempt to find someone that installs that brand of alarm to see if they can provide remotes for you or tell you how to disable it.  Otherwise, if nothing else works, you've little choice other than removing the alarm and reconnecting the ignition wires.
