Hyundai Repair: My Hyundai, 2002, Hyundai

Question
Hi, I have a 2002 Hyundai Accent 2 door Hatchback and it doesn't go in reverse does that necessarily mean i need a new transmission or is there another repair that can fix that?

Answer
It does not necessarily mean that the transmission itself is bad in the vehicle. There are several other possibilities depending on the situation as well.

If the transmission is an automatic, it could be part of the relay or a sensor that is not responding when you put the car in reverse. There is a sensor located at both the transmission as well as the shifter, and if either one of those sensors is not relaying correctly, then your car does not see that it is being put into reverse and will transition it to neutral. If this is the case, an easy way to tell is to put the car in reverse and push on the gas. If the car revs but does not move, there is a fairly good chance that it is just part of the relay then.

Another thing that effects automatic transmissions quite often is a failure of the "clutch drum." Even BMW had issues with this several years back where the snap ring would go out eliminating the pressure from the clutch drum when the car was put into reverse, eliminating its ability to drive in reverse.

If the transmission is a manual, it could be the shift cables that operate the transmission. With constant shifting, these two cables can become either too tight or too loose. They are a quick replacement but must be bought in a pair. Hyundai does not sell just one cable alone.

If you have more details as to what kind of transmission it is, what exactly the car is doing, such as whether or not it is hard to shift into reverse, if there are any unordinary noises, if you smell any fluids, etc., I will galdly do my best to be of more assistance to you.
