Hyundai Repair: 1992 HYUNDAI EXCEL TIMING, hyundai excel, heli coil

Question
QUESTION: Hi Onder
I hope you can help me..we had the timing belt tensioner let go in my 1992 Hyundai Excel. It chewed up and gouged the new water pump..the right tensioner bolt wasn't even in the hole..it had fallen out..the LEFt tensioner bolt had to be re-threaded with a heli-coil..However, we had to take a dremel and shave a bit off the right side engine block mounting position for the right side tensioner bolt- it was gouged and ruined..Now the TENSIONER will not sit level..the BOTTOM of the tensioner is cocked out a bit (crooked). And the TIMING BELT is walking off the CAMSHAFT TOWARD the ENGINE..how can we fix this??? Also,The new timing belt is half way off the TOP CAMSHAFT WHEEL and backing off toward the engine..can I drive it?? Only one half of the belt is on the cam, but it starts and runs. Also, who can fix this..machine shop, Hyundai? HELP!!! THANKS PLEASE EMAIL

ANSWER: Hello Gail,
It is really hard to tell you how to fix it without seeing the actual situation. All the mowing parts that timing belt works on must be aligned. If one of them is off, this will force the timing belt off the sprocket. If both threads are fine , try to put washers under the tensioner to be able to make it aligned with the camshaft and crankshaft sprockets. Do not drive the vehicle like that. Timing belt can jump out, or rub on the belt cover and brake.

QUESTION: Thanks Onder for the fast reply~
we don't know which way to shim..the BOTTOM of the TENSIONER is pretty even with crank and camshaft..but top of TENSIONER  is about one quater inch INWARD..which way do we shim..to make the tensioner come OUTWARDS, or INwards toward the block? The timing belt itself is coming off the cam toward the engine block(toward valve cover)
Also, we tried to shim before and it did not work..will try again..what kind of washers do we use..do they have to be special kind of metaL?
Can a machine shop fiux this or do they ahve to pull the engine?  :(
thanks for all your help, Onder..keep up the good work!

Answer
Hello Gail,
You do not need special shims. Use regular flat washers to make it even. If bottom side is even, put couple washers under the top hole of the tensioner and install the bolt. See if it is even. Try to add or remove washer/s to have even surface.
