Hyundai Repair: Hyundai SanteFe 2002, hyundai santefe, timing belt

Question
I heard a noise in my car that sounded like a belt in my car. I changed the belts and still made the noise. I took it to a car repair guy and he told me maybe it was the timing belt. I was driving it home and it just quit no noise no lights came on , on the dash it was just like someone pulled the plug on it. Any ideas?

Answer
Since your later question indicates you have a four cylinder, I'd suspect the timing belt as the most likely culprit.  While I don't have a good idea of the noise you heard, the timing belt on the 4 cylinder engine is prone to failure near the required maintenance interval, which is 4 years or 60,000 miles.  At the very least, you're probably a year overdue.  When the timing belt strips or breaks, the engine will just shut off.
