Hyundai Repair: no fire, crankshaft position sensor, talented mechanics

Question
I have a 2000 Elantra Wagon. Two years ago the dealer replaced the main control module. The other day the engine wouldn't ignite. My mechanic said it is getting no fire and the control module is giving strange codes for alot of things. They are taking a long time and seem perplexed. What to do.

Answer
Your spark is controlled by the engine control module (ECM), based primarily off data it receives from the crankshaft position sensor.  In most cases when there's no spark, the crank sensor is the culprit.

Can you give me the trouble code numbers that are present?  This will probably help me understand what is occurring.

Not knowing your mechanic, I don't know whether he's qualified for this type of work.  There are many talented mechanics at dealers and other shops, but the majority of mechanics have difficulty with these types of diagnoses and repairs.  Perhaps ask your mechanic if he feels comfortable that he'll be able to make a proper diagnosis.  If not, maybe it's time to tow the car to a shop that can better diagnose the problem.  The dealer is typically a good place for this because there's usually at least one mechanic at each dealer that's good at this type of work.
