Hyundai Repair: Timing belt replacment, hundai sonata, crank pulley

Question
QUESTION: Hello,

I'm working on a 2002 Hundai Sonata, replacing the timming belt.

I know the marks on the Cam shafts sprockets need to be aligned to the marks on the back cover, but I have trouble understanidng how to aling the crank shaft marks. If ia have piston #1 on top, would the cranck shaft be aligned?

Some guidance on this would be appreciated!
Thanks,

Armando

ANSWER: Yes, the carnkshaft will be aligned if piston #1 is at TDC.  The downside is that this is sometimes difficult to gauge.

There is a cut in the spacer or a divot on the crankshaft sprocket depending on which engine you have in your Sonata.  If you follow-up with the engine you have (2.4 four cylinder or 2.7 V6), I'll attempt to provide a clear description of what you're looking for.

Of course, diagrams are much better than any description I can give.  Hyundia offers service information to the public for free at www.hmaservice.com.  The site requires Internet Explorer, and you'll need to register for a free account.  Once you've logged in, the information you want will be in the timing system section of the shop manual for your vehicle.

QUESTION: Hello, thanks for you answer. I did managed to put everything back together, but at the end, the engine (4 cyl) neve started, The markings are correctly aligned, so I removed the plug on piston one and sense no pressure, also de motor turns pretty freely, do you think there is damage to the valves?

Answer
If the timing belt broke or stripped, then it's likely you've at least bent your valves.  Before yanking the head off, remove the upper cover and doublecheck your camshaft timing.  When the cams are aligned, your crank pulley mark should be aligned with the one on the timing cover.
