Hyundai Repair: Radio wiring, box speakers, radio harness

Question
The plug from the radio harness was cut out of the car. I an trying to install a radio but the speakers in the car wont work. Box speakers will but I don't want boxes on the seats. Help?

Answer
It's possible the speaker wiring in your car isn't set up for the radio you're trying to install.  Many aftermarket radios use a common ground for all the speakers, but each Hyundai speaker has two wires going to it.  In this case, you'd need to take the negative wire for each speaker and attach to a ground or splice into the speaker ground through the radio, depending on the system your radio uses.  Since you can operate other speakers, we know the radio is indeed operating.

As a preliminary step, I'd recommend registering for a free account at www.hmaservice.com (requires Internet Explorer).  Select your year and model and go to the ETM (Electrical Troubleshooting Manual) section, where you can view the audio system schematic.  Then compare with the schematic for the replacement radio.  This should help you determine what's necessary for your replacement radio to operate properly.
