Hyundai Repair: Headlights, halogen bulbs, silverstar bulbs

Question
I have been having problems with my low beams and fog lamps. I've had the car for a little over a year and have changed the low beam bulbs once. Just a few months after I changed them, one light went out again. Then a few days after that, the fog lamps went out. Any suggestions? Fuses? Wiring?

Answer
The life of the bulbs will vary with the bulb type and quality of the bulbs themselves.  The particular bulbs used in your vehicle will depend on the year and model of your vehicle.  H7 bulbs, from what I've seen, have the shortest life of any halogen bulbs.  If that's what you have in your car, the situation probably won't get much better.  If you're within the 5 year/60,000 mile warranty period, have them serviced under warranty.  Otherwise, try to purchase brand name bulbs.  I've also heard that SilverStar bulbs have a shorter life than most, but that is purely anecdotal.  I have no personal experience.

A problem with a fuse or the wiring is not a possibility, since replacing the bulb (presumably) repairs the issue.  If there were a fuse or wiring problem, replacing the bulb wouldn't make the lamp work again.  One potential problem is that your alternator is putting out too much voltage, but that's not very likely.  If that were the case, your air bag lamp should have come on.
