Hyundai Repair: Transmission Fluid and Servicing, gearbox oil, clutch fluid

Question
Hi HT

I replaced the clutch on my 1997 Accent this earlier this year. I'd like to know if I would need to replace my gearbox oil if it was last replaced a year ago. Also, is the tranmission fluid on a manual car the same thing as the gearbox oil or is there some sort of clutch fluid?

One more thing: Hyundai servicing tends to cost more than an average respected garage. Do you think the mechanics there do their job any better or with any greater care? Or is it even worthwhile to have a service performed at Hyundai after the warranty has expired?

Thank you.

Answer
Every 30,000 miles is a good rule of thumb for replacing the manual transmission gear oil.  You'll want to use 70W-90 or 75W-90 gear oil.

The clutch system operates using hydraulic fluid (DOT 3 brake fluid).  This is the operational fluid for the clutch and is not involved in lubricating clutch components.  The clutch doesn't need any lubrication beyond a little grease on the splines during replacement or reassembly.

Just like independent shops, some dealers are better than others.  While I'm typically a firm believer in factory parts, many aftermarket parts are of very good quality.  Whether paying for servicing at the dealer is worthwhile for you is a decision you'll need to make.  If your experience at the dealer has been good, I think it's worth considering.  If it's been poor, you'll probably be just as well off somewhere else.
