Hyundai Repair: 2001 Santa Fe rought shift/wont shift, transmission control module tcm, transmission control module

Question
My 01 Santa Fe 6 cyl, just started shifting rough, getting stuck in gear when in D.. seems like stuck in 3rd gear, and winding out but no power, usually can move over to manually shift, but often shifts with a clunky jerk that is disturbing.  Strangely sometimes it is fine, no problem and no ch eng light, other times usually after warms up, becomes constant problem, and ck eng light on.  Sometimes checking trans fluid, which is not low, seems to clear light and problem???  Even though didn't add any fluid.  Question #1.. is this under warranty, and 2 any idea what it is.  I've read several other owners with same problem, but never what is solution.  Thanks.

Answer
What's occurring is that your transmission control module (TCM) detects a problem, places the transmission in failsafe (3rd gear only), and turns on the check engine lamp.  When you turn the vehicle off and restart it, the transmission will again operate normally and the check engine lamp will be out until the TCM detects the problem again.

The first step in determining the nature of the problem is to retrieve the diagnostic trouble codes from the engine control module (ECM) and TCM.  AAMCO and AutoZone have advertised they'll check trouble codes for free.  Follow-up here with the code numbers, and I'll explain what they mean and how to proceed with diagnosis/repair.
