Hyundai Repair: 2002 Hyundai Santa Fe A/C compreser stopped working, hyundai santa fe, engine control module ecm

Question
What should we do to trouble shoot my Santa Fe? My car is a used car with about 116000 miles on it and it didn't come with a owners manual. Is there any thing we can do to solve this problem on our own. If it helps my fan still works but the compressor just want come on.

Answer
You'll need to do some testing to determine why the compressor isn't running.  If you have power at the compressor connector when the a/c is on, then the problem is with the compressor.  If not, it's likely enough refrigerant has leaked out to prevent the engine control module (ECM) from activating the compressor.  There are many other possible other issues, such as a blown fuse, defective thermistor, defective pressure switch, or defective a/c switch, but these are much less common.

Beyond checking for power at the compressor, most further diagnosis won't be able to be performed by most do-it-yourselfers.  Once you reach the point where you're no longer able to effectively diagnose the system, I recommend taking the vehicle to a professional for diagnosis.
