Hyundai Repair: 2000 Hyundai Elantra Difficulty Pumping Gas into Tank, hyundai elantra, 2000 hyundai elantra

Question
I was told by Bob Dance Hyundai after paying $80 this was a "charcoal filter issue" and they wanted $450.00 to repair. My mechanic said that it is rare to replace this part.
Check engine light keeps going on we are hoping replacing filter will solve problem.
I called the dealer and bought the part for $133.00. My HONEST mechanic's labor will be only $60.00. My mechanic also said the tube going to tank is VERY small, and that was also unusual.
Whats up with this car???

Answer
All 1998 and newer vehicles have small piping from the filler neck leading into the fuel tank.  This is because the federal government mandated on-board refueling vapor recovery (ORVR), meaning that all vapors from fueling must be handled by your vehicle in order to prevent pollution during refueling.

I can say that the charcoal canister filter is a common issue for the problem you report.  Diagnosis for this problem can be involved, so I think $80 was probably a fair price for diagnosis.  I'm not sure why the part and labor to install are so expensive.
