Hyundai Repair: 2002 XG350, mile powertrain warranty, timing belt replacement

Question
The car is due for the timing belt replacement. I am going to have the drive belts replaced at the same time. Should I also have the water pump replaced? Where is the water pump on the 3.5L engines?

Answer
The water pump is behind the timing cover, about in the center of the V of the engine.  If you're the original owner, don't replace the water pump.  The water pump will be covered by the 10 year/100,000 mile powertrain warranty in that case.

If you're not the original owner, then I'd say it's a matter of preference.  I haven't seen many water pump failures on this engine, but anything can happen.  If you're considering replacing the water pump, get a price quote on replacing the water pump separately, and a quote on the additional cost to replace while doing the timing belt.  Let the pricing and the relatively low failure rate guide you in your decision.
