Hyundai Repair: refueling problem, hyundai repair, charcoal canister

Question
2002 Hyundai Accent  When ever I put gas in the car, the kicks off unless I pump real slow. It will take up to ten minutes to fill the tank up. I hope you have some ideas. Thank you for your time.

Answer
You either have a restriction preventing the fuel from properly entering the tank, or a restriction preventing the vapors from venting through the charcoal canister.

You can visually check to be sure there's no physical damage to the tank, filler neck, or evaporative piping, and that the hoses are not twisted.  Beyond that, to get a definitive answer, you'll probably need a professional diagnosis.  Common items that cause this problem on your car are either a clogged canister or canister filter.

You'll need to keep in mind that your car doesn't have a canister close valve.  But the principle for diagnosis is the same.  Start with the vent to the atmosphere and work backward until the blockage is found.
