Hyundai Repair: 2001 Sante Fe, sante fe, straightforward procedure

Question
I have a 2001 Sante Fe, and can feel a sort of clicking noise under the driver's side floorboard when I turn the steering wheel.  It doesn't happen all the time, will make noise for a few days and then stop for a few. I had a local shop look at it, but they checked it and could only rule out a few things; couldn't pinpoint the problem. (Thought it might be the racket pinion steering?--and I am unable to get it into the dealer right away.)  If it is, could this be dangerous?

Answer
Providing the shop performed a thorough steering and suspension check and was unable to locate the problem easily, it's very unlikely there's a dangerous situation.  The clicking noise could be coming from many places, so it's difficult for me to develop a good picture of what's actually occurring.

If the shop is able to reproduce the noise in the service bay, it should be a reasonably straightforward procedure to find the source.  If it only occurs when driving, however, it can be very time consuming and complicated.
