Hyundai Repair: 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe 4 cylinder, hyundai sante fe, air conditioning compressor

Question
I believe I might have 2 individual problems! 1. when turning the heat/air selector for direction( feet, dash, etc.) the engine gets a high pitch whine and powers down considerably: and when I turn on the fan it roars! Secondly...when I drive..the radio turns on by itself I've even checked for a "sticky button", when I open the door the dome light goes on then dims and sometimes even goes out! Something in the wiring .of course my warranty ran out a few months back and this is giving me the willies!!!!

Answer
It actually sounds as if you may have four problems.

1.  Whining/power loss when HVAC mode switch is moved.  Since this is an entirely electrical system, I suspect that the whining occurs when the air conditioning compressor begins to run.  Depending on the noise, it could be normal, or your compressor could have a problem.

2.  Roaring from the HVAC fan is typically caused by debris in the fan.  This is nothing more than an annoyance and will not cause any damage unless whatever is in the fan is large enough to cause a vibration (which you'd be able to feel in the dash).

3.  Radio turns on by itself.  Unfortunately, I've seen this many times.  It's a defect within the radio.  Radio replacement is the solution.

4.  Dome lamp dims/goes out.  This could be nothing more than a defective door switch or a poor connection at the door switch.  If the car mistakenly thinks you've shut the door, it'll turn out the dome lamp.
