Hyundai Repair: 99 Elantra Transmission, transmission overhaul, control modules

My daughter has a 99 elantra and it stopped going in reverse and would only go forward. Now it stopped going forward also. It makes a noise like it is trying to pump up pressure for a few seconds when put into gear and then just does nothing. This happened over the course of two days. There where no previous issues with the trans. but the check engine light has been on for a month!

Chances are very high that you'll need a transmission overhaul or replacement.  

Check the fluid to be sure it's at the proper level.  If it's low, add fluid as appropriate, recheck the transmission operation, and check for leaks.

You should also check to see what trouble codes are stored in the engine and transmission control modules if you can.  This may provide additional information about what has occurred.
