Hyundai Repair: upper brake light replacement, stop lamp, plastic covering

Question
elantra gt 2003 hatchback (5 door)

i bought the correct bulb and i'm looking to find where i can get into replace the brake light above the hatch window. there is no screw access allow me to remove the plastic covering. does it just snap out without causing damage? or do you pull the cord out which obviously holds the bulb?

Answer
I apologize for taking so long on this, but I didn't know the answer right away and needed to research the brake lamp.

What I've found is that the high mounted stop lamp in the '03 Elantra hatchback uses LEDs.  Hence, there is no bulb to be replaced.

If only some of the elements in your brake lamp are out, you'll need to replace the lamp.

If all of the elements are out, you'll need to do some diagnosis to figure out where the problem is.

If all of your brake lamps are out, you should first check the brake pedal switch.

If the outer brake lamps illuminate, you know the brake lamp switch is working normally.  In this case, you should snap off the upper liftgate trims and check for power and ground at the lamp connector.  If you have power and ground, you'll need a new lamp assembly.  If not, you'll need to find the problem in the wiring between the pedal switch and the 3rd brake lamp.
