Hyundai Repair: 2001 Elantra is overheating, fans run, engine temperature

Question
When the air conditioner button is on the fans are running, But the car is overheating the guage goes Hot. I then have to shut down the car to cool then when you start it back up the fans don't come on but when I turn the AC button on the fans run and the car over heats.

Answer
The fans will automatically come on when the air conditioning is turned on.  Since this doesn't reduce the engine temperature appropriately, it's likely that the fans and their control are not the issue.  It's more likely that your coolant is low or that your thermostat does not open, preventing coolant flow.  I'd recommend not driving the vehicle until it's repaired.  If it's overheated too badly, you can damage the radiator and engine.
