Hyundai Repair: Hyundai, alternator belt, hyundai accent

Question
i am pretty sure my handbrake is not up. when i say the 'park' light, i mean the 'P' in a circle that illuminates on the dashboard and the handbrake light is the 'exclamation mark' in a circle next to the 'P' which illuminates. sometimes i drive for a long period of time and they don't come on but when they do come on, they come on TOGETHER and last for a few seconds then go off then they MAY come back on again a few times. do you have any additional info. (thank you for your reply so far)

hello. i own a '96 Hyundai Accent 1500cc. recently while driving, the handbrake light and park light (on the dashboard) have been coming on momentarily then going off for varying periods of time. could you tell me what the problem may be.could it be serious? thank you.

I'm not sure what you mean by "park light."  I presume you're not referring to the dash illumination that comes on when you turn on your lights.  The brake warning indicator typically comes on for one of three reasons:

1.  Parking brake handle is pulled up.
2.  Brake fluid is low, usually caused by worn front brakes.
3.  Along with the battery indicator (red lamp, square box, + and - often in box) due to the alternator not properly charging.

As a first step, you should check your brake fluid.  If it's low, you should inspect your brake system or have it inspected by a reputable repair facility.  If the battery lamp also comes on, you should check your alternator belt to be sure it's tight enough, and you should check the charging system's operation (or have a reputable facility check your car).

Answer
The icons you describe aren't used in the U.S., so I'll need you to look in your owner's manual and find out what they indicate.  I'm pretty sure at least one of the things you describe is indeed a brake warning indicator, so the things I already listed should still apply.
