Hyundai Repair: Tiburon Temperature Guage, fuel injection computer, temperature guage

Question
We have a 2001 Tiburon 4 cyl with a dead engine temperature guage. (always reads cold) I noticed two temp  sensors located side-by-side near the thrmostadt, and "assume" the forward one is for the guage and the aft one for the fuel injection computer. I show continuity through the sensor, but didn't note the exact ohm reading. I jumped the sensor wire direct to ground and the guage still didn't move, so I am suspecting a problem in the guage itself or the wiring somewhere between the sensor and guage. Do you know of any likely causes? If I have to chase the problem into the instrument cluster, how is it best accessed? BTW - the fuel guage works properly in case there are any shared components that you would suspect. Thanks for any help you can offer.

Answer
The sender for the gauge is connected to the one-wire connector.  Disconnected, the gauge should read cold, and connected, the gauge should read hot.

Typically, the gauges in the cluster share the same power and ground, so you'll be primarily interested in checking the resistance of the signal wire.  If okay, count on the problem being the gauge.

It's been awhile since I've had one of these apart, but based on the diagram in the shop manual, it appears that you'll need to remove the lower dash trim and then the upper trim around the cluster.  The cluster should then unscrew and pull out.
