Hyundai Repair: 2000 Sonata - Vibration, vibration frequency, wheel balance

Question
There is a vibration in the front end of this car that intensifies with speed.  It is not severe and as soon as I turn even slightly to the left it goes away.  The moment you return to straight ahead steering it immediately returns.

WHEEL Bearing ??  CV Joint ?? What's your guess?

Regards,

BOB

Answer
My initial guess is a wheel bearing.  They usually make a humming noise that gets louder with vehicle speed, and have a frequency that varies with vehicle speed.  Some people miss the fact that it varies only with vehicle speed and not acceleration and confuse it with exhaust noise.

If after reading the description, it doesn't sound like your issue, the following may help determine the cause:

Are you familiar with wheel out-of-balance type vibrations?

Is the vibration similar in frequency to wheel balance vibrations or does it have a higher frequency?

Does the vibration frequency vary with vehicle speed?
with engine rpm?

Do you hear a noise accompanying the vibration?
If so, does its loudness vary with vehicle speed?
with engine speed?
