Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Elantra Transmission, hyundai elantra, engine control module ecm

Question
Hi there,

I have a problem with the automatic transmission on a Hyundai Elantra. The car has done 82000 miles. When
driving from a standstill (especially when the car is cold) it seems to jerk into second gear, you experience the same fairly violent jerk as the car comes to a stop.
I have noticed that the longer that you drive the car for the less noticable the change becomes.

Further to this the transmission will not shift beyond third gear, it simply continues to accelerate without changing up - making the engine rev quite hard when driving at higher speeds.

The fluid in the transmission has been replaced with fresh fluid just recently to no avail, I am now wondering if the transmission needs replacement, or if this is just a simple electrical problem.

Thanking you in advance for your time and trouble.

Answer
Chances are good that this may be a simple electrical issue, especially if your check engine lamp is coming on.

Have the Engine Control Module (ECM) and Transmission Control Module (TCM) checked for diagnostic trouble codes.  Then diagnose any codes related to the transmission.  I'm presuming you'll need help with this, so if you report back with the trouble codes, I'll assist you with determining the cause of your problem.
