Answer
If your battery and brake lamps are on, your alternator has turned these lamps on because it is not charging.  This is almost always an indicator that the alternator is properly connected and receiving the proper input but not working.  Your defogger won't work if the alternator is not working because the ETACM (electronic time and alarm control module) looks for charging voltage to determine whether the engine is running.  We don't have DRL in the U.S., so I'm not sure, but there may be similar logic in the DRL control module.  I.e., engine not running = no need for DRL to work.

Check the alternator belt and verify it's properly tensioned.  If so, I expect you have just installed a defective alternator.

My apologies.  I left off the original response that you will not be able to check the diagnostic trouble codes without an OBD-II code reader or scan tool.  If your check engine lamp is coming on and you've repaired the issue, you can clear the trouble code and lamp by disconnecting the battery for a few seconds.  If you haven't repaired the issue, you should read the trouble code first so you know what type of issue you might have prior to clearing the code.
