Hyundai Repair: power steering noise, alternator belt, hyundai elantra

Question
When the car, a 2001 Hyundai Elantra, is running and the steering is turned all the way to the stops, the power steering pump will stop and the belt will squeal. Is there a pressure relief valve that's not working or is the pump going bad?

Answer
Usually, the symptom you describe occurs when the alternator belt is loose.  If you can flex the alternator belt at all with light pressure, it's too loose.  Similarly, a loose power steering belt can cause the issue.  The power steering belt, however, should be a little looser than the alternator belt.  It should flex slightly when light pressure is applied.
