Hyundai Repair: Not starting, cylinder head gasket, head gasket replacement

Question
Hi HT Thanks for your info about the Elantra 1994 I managed to get on to the service site. The reason for the head gasket replacement was a faulty radiator.,car overheated.I have now with your help and the manual put the cam belt on I have the bottom crank pulley mark in line with the mark, the oil pump marks also line up.finally the two cams have the dowels upright and the marks lined up All the marks on the cams are parallel with the top of the head. The engine turns over but just wont start. If i turn the engine by hand to check the spark ,it seems to spark on the downward stroke and also when it is on the ignition stroke (is it correct to spark twice?)
i hope I have given you enough to see where I need assistance.
thanks again for your prompt replies.

Answer
You may want to check your compression, Ron.  In nearly every case where one of these engines has overheated badly enough to cause the cylinder head gasket to leak, the cylinder head is warped beyond repair.  If your car was overheated so badly it wouldn't run, I fully expect you to need a new cylinder head.

Your engine management system uses what's called a waste spark.  It is indeed normal for it to fire each cylindr once per crankshaft revolution (twice per camshaft revolution).  It fires cylinders 1 and 4 simultaneously and cylinders 2 and 3 simultaneously.
