Hyundai Repair: idling problem, throttle plate, driveability

Question
I have a 2.7L V6 2002 Sonata and have had a idling problem for quite sometime now. We first noticed the problem when it wouldn't start one morning without giving it gas first. But, when you gave it gas it started everytime. We took it to a shop and they adjusted the idling speed up and it fixed that problem, but now the idling speed keeps getting higher every day. It now idles in park at 1400 and 1000 to 1100 in gear. What do you suggest the problem to be? We have had it looked at several time and noone can find the problem. Your knowledge would be most appreciated. Thanks

Answer
The idle speed on your car is controlled by computer and is not adjustable.  The only way to make the car idle faster is to do something which will cause the throttle plate to be held partially open.  This will, in turn, make the computer unable to control your idle.

It isn't very often that a person can give me enough details about their repairs that I can tell without looking at the car that someone has improperly repaired something.  But if the shop claims to have adjusted your idle, they're simply not qualified to be working on this sort of problem on your vehicle.

You should request a refund from the shop that said they adjusted your idle, since the idle is computer controlled and is not adjustable.  You should also not allow them to do any further work on your car involving diagnosing and repairing problems related to how the car runs (beyond returning your car to the state it was in before they made any adjustments).  Then you'll need to take the car to a *good* driveability shop (or the dealer) which has the tools and knowledge to investigate your problem, determine the cause, and repair it properly.
