Hyundai Repair: engine failing, air flow sensor, heavy rainstorm

Question
I'm curious what the dealer found wrong the first time.  It doesn't sound like they replaced your engine.  Can you tell me what work they did?  Did they report any diagnostic trouble codes on your receipt?  Did they list what they considered to be the cause of the problem on the receipt?  These things may help me understand what is occurring with your vehicle.

Thanks for your input. I really appreciate it. Here is what it said on the 10/30/06 invoice:

Milage 9066
code PO 102 air flow signal low input found water and bubbles in air box
Replaced air flow sensor, air filter, air box and the snorkel assembly running from air box to the fender.
Also did a courtesy inspection.

When I got it back, it vibrated on and off, especially when I was slowing down/braking and felt like it was going to cut out on me again but it never did (until today). I figured I was being paranoid as they assured me all was well. Side note: During an an oil change visit at 5,000 miles and they stated that the brakes vibrated like a car with 30,000 miles on it and replaced the pads and whatever else. They wanted to know if I had unusual driving conditions. First red flag! Then a problem with the air bag sensor. Second red flag! When the car broke down in October and they found water/suds in the air filter, they speculated I must have inadvertently done something to it.(Not what you want to hear after such an ordeal.) In the end, they speculated I could have driven over a puddle during this heavy rainstorm and the water got sucked into the system somehow. They covered the cost, thank goodness! I still don't know what they found today as of yet. Will hear tomorrow. Sorry to go on...I appreciate your time and expertise.

-----Question-----
I own a 2005 Santa Fe, 3.5 v6 4wd There is approx. 9800 miles on the car.

My engine died while driving in the rain about 2 months ago.Service said they found suds and water in the air filter and wondered if I had brought it through a car wash (which I hadn't). They could not explain why this happened and decided to cover the cost of taking care of everything to make the car driveable again. The car didn't feel "right" when I got it back, but it ran without major issues until today. The same thing happened again while driving. This time it was a sunny day. The engine light came on and the wheel locked up and the engine died. I was able to start it but unable to move/control it at first. It rolled a bit even though I had my foot on the brake as it did last time. Both times, we were able to get it to start and move several feet out of dangers way before dying on us again. I have a child and am now very nervous about putting him in this car for fear it will happen again and we won't be as lucky as the first 2 times to not have gotten hit by traffic.
I am waitng to hear the diagnosis this time around. Any ideas what could be going on?

It sounds like the current issue may be somewhere within the throttle control system on your vehicle.  Your vehicle has an electronic throttle, meaning that the engine control module (ECM) monitors how much you depress the accelerator pedal and then activates an electric motor on your engine that opens the throttle accordingly.  If the system detects a problem, it may stop activating the throttle to prevent you from driving the vehicle in a situation in which it may accelerate uncontrollably.

The most likely reason that your brakes were not effective is that you only have about two brake applications after the engine stops running before you've lost the power assist from the brake booster.  After that, it takes tremendous effort to apply significant braking force.

Answer
If the air filter was wet, that could prevent air from entering the engine and cause the engine to stall and the P0102 code that was present to be set.

I'm doubtful that the water will be present again.  It's more likely that you're having a problem with one of the sensors or with the electrical connection to that sensor.  If they find a similar trouble code, I'd suspect that the air flow sensor connector terminals may be making poor contact, since they've already replaced the air flow sensor.
