Hyundai Repair: 03 Tiburon clutch, clutch master cylinder, clutch disc

Question
just purchase my daughter a pre-owned (private party) 59k mile '03 tiburon 4 cylinder, manual trans.  clutch engages very far 'out'.  doesn't look like there's much adjustment on the master cylinder end, up under the dash - and no adjust on the trans end that I see.  does this mean the clutch disc is thin and in need of replacement?  it's not slipping yet.  is there an adjustment that I'm not seeing?   if it needs replacing, factory or aftermarket?  what's a good d.i.y. manual for the job?

Answer
What you describe is typically an indication that the clutch disc is worn and will be slipping soon.  The pushrod adjustment you looked at is only for pedal free play and shouldn't be used in an attempt to adjust the pedal height.  Once it's set properly, there's no reason to adjust it again unless the clutch master cylinder is replaced.

Most of the factory clutch parts are made by Valeo.  You can probable get a clutch disc of similar quality at a lower price by purchasing a name brand aftermarket.  Just make sure it's a good name brand.  You definitely won't want to do this job twice.

Replacing a clutch in an '03 Tiburon isn't your typical do-it-yourself job.  You'll need to remove the subframe and you'll need to have a way of supporting the engine while the subframe and transmission are out of the vehicle.  What's worse is that there's little out there in the way of DIY information for the Hyundai line.  You can, however view the factory service manual at www.hmaservice.com.  The site requires Internet Explorer, and you'll need to register for a free account.
