Hyundai Repair: 2003 Sante Fe Speed Sensor, obd ii code reader, home mechanic

Question
We have a 2003 Sante Fe V-6. The check engine light comes on at times and the car switches to limp home mode or stays in 1st or 2nd gear. Over nite the check engine lite will reset and stay off for a while but eventually comes on again.  My question is Can I pull the codes somehow and if it is one of the common speed sensor problems which one should it be and can it be replaced by a home mechanic? Also how does one replace the speed sensor and are there any special tricks or dangers.   Thanks,  Dave

Answer
The input and output speed sensors are fairly easy to replace.  Once you remove the air box, you've got fairly direct access.  If you're replacing the input speed sensor, you'll also need to move the shift cable bracket out of the way.

To get the trouble codes, you'll need to use an OBD-II code reader.  AutoZone has advertised they'll read the codes for free.
