Hyundai Repair: My Hyundai Accent, crankshaft sensor, hyundai accent

Question
My 2001 Hyundai Accent GL 1.6L auto-trans stopped running the other morning. I had driven it fine the night before, but it wouldn't start the next morning. We listened to it as we tried to start it and figured out that the fuel pump had quit working. We replaced the fuel pump, but the car still wouldn't start. Our mechanic (friend) pulled the #1 plug wire and found out that it wasn't getting any spark. We tried testing everything he knew how to test, including pulling the coil pack and having our local parts store test it (it seems fine). There is no local dealer or repair shop that can diagnose the problem without charging too much money. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you.

Answer
If the fuel pump really isn't running, you should first check to see whether the check engine lamp illuminates for at least a few seconds when the key is turned to the "on" position.  If not, you'll need to look into why the engine computer isn't becoming active.

I suspect, however, that the issue is the crankshaft sensor.  Without the input from the crankshaft sensor, the computer does not have the information it needs to fire the injectors and spark plugs.

But you'll also need to understand that the list of potential problems is large.  While I understand you cannot take your car to have it tested while it's not running, a scan tool is probably a quite effective device in determining the actual problem.  Without it, you're in for making guesses or doing a rather large amount of painstaking tests, some of whose results may well be inconclusive.
