Hyundai Repair: 2000 Sonata transmission issues, car returns, transmission damage

Question
My 2000 Sonata V6 just started acting up today. When I push on the gas, the car very slowly begins to speed up - it almost seems like my transmission is going. At the same time my check engine light came on. I am wondering if this is some sort of a sensor problem, and if so could I change the sensor myself. Also is it dangerous to drive the car in this condition.

Thanks for any help.

Fred

Answer
Chances are this is a minor sensor issue.  To find out what specific sort of issue you have, you'll need to read the engine and transmission trouble codes.

If it is indeed in need of replacing a sensor, this is something most mechanically inclined people could do themselves.

If the car returns to normal when you turn the ignition off and back on, it's probably okay to drive.  Continued driving while in failsafe (third gear only), however, can cause transmission damage.
