Hyundai Repair: Transmission (?), transmission shop, miles away from home

Question
I was 60 miles away from home last night and suddenly my 2001 Santa Fe began to lose pulling power. When I kept my foot on the accelerator, every few seconds it was like the transmission was engaging (hard-jerking) for a few seconds and then give way again. If I released the peddle for a few seconds after it lost the pulling, it would ease back into engagement. I ended up feathering this all the way home. When I had to stop at lights, I had to manual shift the transmission. It acted similar to this 2 yrs ago, and we replace the input and output sensors. Could this be the same case, and me not knowing where they are located, could this be something that I could change easily with no special tools?

Answer
This doesn't sound like a problem with a sensor, but rather more like a problem with a low fluid level or a problem with the internal workings of the transmission.

First, check your fluid level.  If it's low, check for leaks, and repair any found.  Top the fluid off to the proper level using SPIII fluid.

If the fluid is okay, I'd recommend having the trouble codes (engine and transmission) read and reporting them back here, or taking the vehicle to the dealer for diagnosis.  I recommend against taking your vehicle to a transmission shop for diagnosis because many of them tend to want to sell transmissions or rebuilds regardless of the problem.
