Hyundai Repair: Hyundai Excel, floor ducts, hyundai excel

Question
Yes, I smell a burning odor. Soon as I try to start the car, smoke comes out of every duct in the car. It definitely smells like something is burning.

The car is a manual. I am not sure what year the car is, how can I check?

Hi, Divari.  It sounds like your transmission is stuck in gear.  Do you have an automatic or manual transmission?

Since you say the car won't start, I presume the smoke coming out the air ducts happens with the car not running.  Do you smell a burning odor?  Does the blower fan need to be running for the smoke to come out of the ducts?  Does the smoke come out of the defroster, dash, or floor ducts?

Additionally, it may help if I know what year the Excel is.

Answer
Gotcha.  Time for the second round of questions.

In regard to the smoke and burning odor:
1.  Does smoke come out of the ducts if the blower fan is not running?
2.  You had originally said that the smoke occurred only after the car lurched backward.  Your response to my question indicated that the smoke occurs as soon as you try to start the car.  Does the smoke occur only after the car lurches backward or as soon as you turn the key to the start position?
3.  Does smoke come out of the vents if you turn the ignition on without attempting to start the vehicle?
4.  Do you see any smoke outside the vehicle, either from underneath or from under the hood?

In regard to the lurching:
5.  Does the clutch pedal feel like it normally does, or is it much harder or easier to depress than normal?
6.  Which gear is the transmission in when you attempt to start the car?
7.  Have you attempted starting the car with the gearshift in neutral?
8.  Do you have the clutch pedal depressed when attempting to start the car?

You can tell what year the car is by the eleventh digit of the vehicle identification number.  You can see a model year decoder here: http://trucks.about.com/cs/usedadvice/a/vin_decoder.htm.
