I have a 2001 XG 300 and the transmission will not change gears, check engine light is on.  Car will not accelerate. Please answer

Hi, Melvin.  You should have the engine and transmission diagnostic trouble codes read.  This should tell you the nature of the issue.  Most likely, the transmission computer is seeing something abnormal and is keeping the transmission in failsafe (3rd gear only).  It could be a simple issue, but you won't know what type of issue it is unless you know what the trouble codes are (and what they mean).
