Small Engines (Lawn Mowers, etc.): Briggs 18hp intek carborater adjustments., carborater, adjustment screws

Question
I need to know what adjustments there are and how to initially set them to get the engine started. Then I need to know what to do to fine tune these adjustments to get the engine to run  properly.

Answer
Depending upon the age of the engine.  The adjustment screws could be in different places or the carburetor.  if the carburetor has a main fuel jet screw it will be the screw that holds the carburetor bowl in place.  If you remove the screw I'm sure you'll see what I mean.  The initial setting would be to lightly  seat the screw and then backed off one to 1 1/2 turns.  If there is an idle adjustment screw meeting a screw that the throttle plate rests against an idle.  You will need a tachometer to adjusy the engine should idle fast enough to stay going the best way to adjust the would be to turn it so that it's all the way out and then turned in about two turms.  Start the engine bring the engine to idle and start screwing that screw until the proper idle is achieved.  Usually 1000 to 1500 RPM' s.
