I want to change out my alternator but I don't know how to take off the belt. Can you tell me how to change out my alternator? Also how to put the belt back on?

Thanks Art

Hi, Hank.  I'll need to know the year and model of your car, as well as what engine you have.

Answer
The belt tensioner is designed so that a 17mm open end wrench will fit over the end.

Put the wrench on the tensioner and push down to release the belt tension.  While you're holding the tensioner down, slip the belt off the p/s pulley.

Disconnect the battery and remove the right front wheel and splash shield.

Disconnect the electrical connector and the lug for the main alternator charging wire.

Unhook the oxygen sensor wire from the alternator case.

Remove the 12mm upper alternator mounting bolt.

Loosen the 14mm nut on the lower alternator mounting bolt until you can rotate the alternator back and forth easily on the bolt.

Rocking the alternator back and forth, gradually push it back and upward off the lower mounting bracket.  (You won't need to remove the lower bolt, the bracket is slotted).

Remove the alternator through the opening in the wheel well.
