If i could ask one more question. If ihave ABS on my car should there be a light on the dash when i turn the key on? I need to order a rear wheel hub assembly (bearing) two choices with abs or without. The car is a 2002 gls v6 with rear disk brakes. Are the rear bearings a problem with these cars? 107000 miles

The output speed sensor is located on the rear of the top of the transmission.  If you look down just behind the air box, you can actually see it there.  Chances are that replacing the sensor will make your problems go away.

The maintenance interval on the transmission fluid is 105,000 miles, so unless you know it's been done, it's probably a good idea to drain and fill it.  Simply remove the 24mm drain plug to drain, and reinstall the plug and add 5 quarts of SPIII transmission fluid.  To my knowledge, this fluid is only available at Hyundai, Kia, and Mitsubishi dealers, but it's critical that you use this and only this fluid in your transmission.  As for the filter, your transmission filter is not serviceable.

There's a reprogram available to remedy a 2-3 shift flare, but I'm not convinced based on your description that you have a shift flare issue.

A shift flare is when the rpm's raise when the transmission begins to shift into the next higher gear, and then come down to the normal level for the next gear.

What you've described to me sounds more like it's just shifting harshly.  It's possible you may just need to reset the adaptive values in the transmission control module.  Drive the vehicle for 15-30 minutes (enough to get the transmission fluid to operating temperature).  Then disconnect the battery for 10 seconds and reconnect.  Then drive the vehicle through several moderate throttle 1-2-3-4 upshifts, and several 4-3, 3-2, and 2-1 downshifts.

If you do have an actual 2-3 shift flare issue, you'll need to have your local dealer reprogram the TCM.  The reprogram is described in TSB 04-40-006-1.

There will be a yellow ABS lamp that illuminates during bulb check if your vehicle is equipped with ABS.  If you're uncertain, you can use the ABS hub on cars with or without ABS.  The only difference is that there's a tone wheel on the back side of the hub for the ABS vehicle.  It's possible one is cheaper than the other, so you might wish to price shop.  Additionally, if you're using the dealer, they'll be able to check whether your car has ABS if you give them the VIN (vehicle identification number).

Early (1999 and newer) Sonatas had problems with the rear hub bearings until the part design was changed to incorporate a dust cover on the back of the hub.  I don't recall seeing any of the new design fail.  If you purchase from the dealer, the new part you receive will have the dust cover (if you don't have ABS.  If you do, there'll be a tone wheel there).
