My son's 2001 Hyundai Accent is having windshield wiper problems.  The wipers will move up to the vertical position and then stay there.  We have been told by various sources that it might be the motor, the linkage, or the rubber boot protecting the linkage.  What do you think is the most likely cause and would it be difficult to fix ourselves?
-----Answer-----
There's not much in the wiper system on this car that's difficult to fix.

First check to see that the wiper arms are securely attached to the linkage.  If not tighten as necessary.

If the arms are tight, unbolt the wiper motor from the body and separate it from the linkage.  Then see if the wipers can be freely moved on the windshield.

If there's excessive resistance, you'll need to replace the linkage.  To do that, you'll need to remove the wiper arms and cowling.

If the linkage moves freely, then the issue is probably in the motor.  Simply snap the new motor onto the linkage, put in place, and bolt up.

It appears to be the linkage.  I have removed the plastic cowling; however, it is not obvious how to remove the linkage itself.
-----Answer-----
The linkage is held in place at the pivots and snaps onto the wiper motor.

Remove the bolts at each pivot (I think 3 each) and unsnap the linkage from the wiper motor arm.  At that point, the assembly should pull out.

Okay, I have messed up.  I unbolted the motor from the linkage instead of snapping it off.  Now, I have no idea how to reset the timing.   Thanks for your patience.

Answer
*****Throughout the procedure, DO NOT put your hands in the wiper linkage when the key is on!  Moving the linkage can cause the wiper motor to start running and the moving linkage can injure you!*****

You'll need to find the linkage's park position.  Move the linkage to where the wipers would be at their lowest point.  This will be the linkage's park position.

Turn on the ignition key and plug in the wiper motor.  Turn the wipers on and off.  Wait for the motor to return to the park position.  Turn off the ignition key.  Bolt the motor to the firewall if it's not already there.  Snap the motor arm into the linkage.  Now move the wipers to the park position.  Then install the motor arm onto the motor and tighten the nut.

Installt the wiper arms and verify the wipers operate and park normally.  If they park out of position, reposition the wiper motor arm on the motor shaft.  This may take a some trial and error.
