-----Question-----
while driving at normal speeds, check engine light comes on, and transmission drops into 3rd gear, it will not shift into 4th gear, and seems to loose power, after shutting car off for a few minutes, and then restarting all is ok. Will shift normal, and after a day or so, check engine light will shut off, need help resolving this matter before it gets worse. Thanks.
-----Answer-----
When you transmission control module (TCM) detects a significant problem, it puts the transmission in third gear only (failsafe) and requests a check engine lamp.  When you turn the key off and restart the vehicle, the transmission will shift normally until the problem is again detected.

To resolve, you'll first need to read the diagnostic trouble codes stored in the TCM.  You may need to pay a shop or dealer to read the codes or do diagnostics.  Most frequently, the problem is nothing more than a defective input or output speed sensor.

Answer
The input and output speed sensors are on top of the transmission.  The input speed sensor is located partly underneath the bracket holding the shift cable onto the transmission.  The output speed sensor looks very similar to the input speed sensor and is on the back of the top of the transmission.
