Hyundai Repair: Cost for crankshaft (crankcase?) sensor repair, crankshaft sensor, crank sensor

Question
I have a 1999 Hyundai Sonata with 93K on it.  It is in the shop
for repair due to the check engine light coming on.  They found
2 problems:  shorted spark plug wire (easy repair and less
expensive) and then a crankshaft (crankcase?) sensor that was
faulty.  Needless to say, the second problem is a higher price
"fix."

I want to be sure that this is not a ficticious repair, and get a
general ballpark figure on what a repair like this might cost
(took it to my Hyundai dealer.

Answer
If you've got a four cylinder, this is a labor intensive repair.  Depending on your geographic location, I'd expect dealer price to be around $400 to $700 for this repair.  If you're anywhere close to needing to do your timing belt, you should also have them replace that while they're replacing the crankshaft sensor, because they will have already performed most of the labor necessary to do the job, i.e. there should only be a small additional labor cost to add the timing and balance belt to the repair.

If you've got a V6, I'd expect repairs to be $300 or less on the crank sensor.

The best way of getting a good idea of a competitive price is to call around a few places in your area.  Prices vary quite a bit simply based on geographic location.  If you're comparing dealer prices, call a couple other dealers and inquire.  If you're considering shops other than the dealer, you should call a few of those places as well.
