Hyundai Repair: 2002 Hyundai Automatic Transmission, toyota tercel, hyundai accent

Question
I actually just spoke with the tranny shop again and they gave me two options.  #1: They can repair the tranny we currently have which will cost $2500 ($1450 parts, $1050 labour) or #2: Install used transmission with 100,000km which will cost $1700 ($650 labour, $850 parts, $200 oil and stuff). Option 2 comes with a 3 month warranty which doesn't seem very great at all and I am soo very nervous about this whole thing.  We have been very good with this car and have it serviced every month even if it doesn't need to be.  We on the other hand have not had very good luck with cars breaking on us.  Last car we had needed a new engine, it was a Toyota Tercel.  We spent $1800 to get a new engine put in and 18 days later the engine blew up.  So, do you see why I am kind of scared about this one especially with having a newborn baby and travelling to Ottawa the day that we get the car finished for Thanksgiving.  I'm just scared that something stupid is going to happen and we just wasted $1700. I will definitely get those codes for you.  Thanks for your reply.

Hi There!!  We have a 2002 Hyundai Accent and in the last week have had a series of problems with it.  The first day we took it in to have the front rotors replaced.  Then th ecar was great and all of a sudden out of the blue the battery completely dies on us and we have to have a new one put in.  Then yet again everything is great and two more days later, we have problems with our transmission.  Basically we took it back to the mechanic who spent 3 hours trying to diagnose the problem and finally checked the computer console or something and got two codes which had to do with the differential I think it's called.  Anyway, the mechanic didn't feel comfortable with pulling the tranny apart to fix the problem so he had the car sent to an actual transmission shop.  After they diagnosed the problem they called us and said it would cost $1500 to repair our current transmission but I thought it should cost this much to do a complete overhaul and put in a brand new tranny.  Am I not right?  We live in Ontario, Canada if this helps.  Also, we want to know if there are problems like this reported of frequently for this year, make, model of car.  Oh yeah also, the car is a GS hatchback if that makes a difference.  We're just wondering what types of problems have been reported that we could potentially expect.  Thank you so much for your help!!!!

Hi, Amanda.  There are no codes actually relating to the differential, so I'd first like to know the actual codes if you can get them.  That'll give me a good idea of whether the problem is a major mechanical issue or simply a sensor issue.  I'm not confident in what the shop has told you, but I also am in no position to question their diagnosis without additional information.

I'm not familiar with the current rate of exchange, but I'd expect the price to replace the transmission with a factory remanufactured unit to be about $1700 to $2100 U.S. (dealer prices).  A complete overhaul is basically the same thing as installing a transmission that's already been remanufactured.  It almost never happens that a transmission is replaced with a brand new one because it's not cost effective.

Answer
Based on what you're looking for, I don't think the used option is very good.  The warranty is minimal and the chances of having a problem are much higher than your other options.

I looked up the exchange rate, and at the higher end of the spectrum, I'd estimate you're looking at about $2400 for a factory remanufactured transmission.  This would simply be a swap between your transmission and one that's already been remanufactured.  If you need major transmission repairs, I think it would be well worth your while to call a few local dealers and ask them the price of replacing your transmission.  I'm not sure about Canada, but U.S. factory parts come with a 1 year/12k mile warranty.  If Canada is similare, I'd expect 1 year/20,000km.

But I'm definitely interested in the trouble codes.  If I know the codes, I'll be able to at least tell you whether an overhaul is consistent with the stored codes.  Also, let me know the symptoms your vehicle displays.
