Hyundai Repair: replacing speed sensor on manual transmission, hyundai elantra, elantra wagon

Question
How difficult is it to replace the speed sensor on a 2000 Hyundai Elantra wagon that has a manual transmission? My speedometer is not working and I was told that it is probably a bad sensor.

Answer
There is no speed sensor on a 2000 Elantra manual transmission.  This car uses a speedometer cable to drive the speedometer mechanically.  Usually, the cable itself breaks.  To check, unscrew it from the top of the differential on the transmission and look to see if you can pull the end out of the cable assembly or if the cable simply stays in the transmission.  If so, you'll need a new cable assembly.

To replace the cable, you'll need to remove the instrument cluster, and feed the cable through the firewall.
