Hyundai Repair: No spark when I crank her over, hyundai coupe, cam sensor

Question
Hi There

I've got a Hyundai Coupe 2.0 1999 model, I had a problem with the engine beign difficult to start so I cleaned all the connections with contact cleaner but wehn I started her she ran for less than a minute and then died. I've had no spark at the plugs since.

I've changed both the cam and crank sensors but still no spark, I've also changed the coil as I thought this was suspect but still no spark.  When I put a voltmeter on the pins of the plug that go into the coil it registers as 12 volts when I turn her over.  Do you think they've sold me a deffective coil or do you think I've cooked the ECU.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated as I'm at a complete loss now.

Many Thanks

Tim

Answer
Hi, Tim.  Just to get a better idea of what exactly you've done, I'd like to know which contacts you've cleaned.

The coil should receive 12V whenever the igntion is on, so your reading there is good.  The ECM controls the ground side of the coil.

When you replaced the old crank sensor, did the o-ring come out with it?  If it stayed in the block and you installed the new sensor with an o-ring on it, it'll be too far away from the sensor wheel on the crankshaft to give a reading.  You might make a similar check on the cam sensor, but that won't keep the vehicle from starting.

If that's all okay, check to see if the check engine lamp illuminates when the key is turned to the on position.  If it doesn't come on at all, you've probably got an issue with the ECM not powering up properly.
