Hyundai Repair: hyndai elantra 2001 check engine light, oxygen sensors, exhaust leaks

Question
i have a 2001 hyndai elantra that has a check engine light on.  the code that is pulling up on it is p0422   can you tell me anything about it?  i need to get this done asap so i can get my inspection

Answer
P0422 means your catalytic converter efficiency is low.  The computer monitors this by comparing the readings from the front (preconverter) oxygen sensor to the rear (postconverter) oxygen sensor.  If your oxygen sensors are working properly and you have no exhaust leaks, then you need a new manifold catalytic converter.

The good news is that this may be covered by your new vehicle warranty.  By federal law, manufacturers must warrant catalytic converters for 8 years, 80k miles.  Also, there's a recall on the exhaust manifold (of which the converter is a part) for cracking.  So if the recall hasn't been done yet and your manifold is cracked, you will get a new manifold and converter under the recall.

My advice would be to take it to the dealer.  Ask them to look into the check engine lamp and to check for any open recalls.
