Hyundai Repair: brakes, wheel bearing grease, brake squeal

Question
just had brakes done about 3 months ago...not to  long after they were done theyve been squeaking....started low and has prograssively got worse.....mechanic said they were just adjusting but it wont stop and i plan to take a look myself and wondered what i might look for to be the problem...i dont think it would be the pads since they were just changed....its an 01 accent....any ideas?

Answer
If you didn't have factory pads installed, the problem is probably with the friction material of the new pads.  Some friction materials lend themselves more to brake squeal.  This doesn't mean the brakes won't function properly, just that they make noise.  What you might do to address this is purchase some high temperature brake and caliper grease from your local parts supplier-- *do not* use standard wheel bearing grease or similar, it'll melt and get all over the friction material and the rotors.  On one side, take the bottom 12mm caliper bolt loose and rotate the caliper up.  Then apply some grease to the backing plate of both the inner and outer pads (where the caliper contacts them).  Be careful not to get any grease on the friction material or the rotors as this will compromise your braking ability.  Then do the same exercise on the other side.  This will help keep the noise to a minimum, but is not guaranteed to make it go away.
