Hyundai Repair: 2001 elantra wont start, hyundai elantra, opinons

Question
hello again,
heres some more info for you based on your questions to me:

1 & 2 when i atempted to start the car it cranks over like it normally has been, just doesnt want to turn all the way over to start the car battery was and has been checked, working fine. running lights, head lights, radio those all go on.

3. we got the car to start pumping the gas, but seemed like it was gasping for gas, and only ran for maybe 5-10 secs and finally died for good.

4. when we got it stared for the short time it didnt do anything differently other than again seemed like it was gasping for gas.

5. my car was running at the time it happened. i was in parking lot stoped with car in park, went to leave, put my car in reverse, car moved back maybe 2-3ft and died right there. waited a minute or 2, thats when we got it to start, so we could move it. but went to put in drive and it barely even moved, just putted along, again like it was almost gasping for gas.

hope this helps you out some more.

Question -
hello,
i have a 2001 Hyundai Elantra. Friday night my car broke down, wouldnt start wouldnt start. finally got it to start but it just barely then died once again. worked on it and thought might have been fuel pump, cause we pulled the lines off and it wasnt pumping any gas. replaced the pump still nothing, checked everything from plugs, battery, pump once again, etc. ive gotten other opinons on what it could be, anywhere from the fuel filter, the lines, intake, the computer etc. whats your take on this situation?

thanks a million, nicole

Given the information we have, any of the opinions could be correct, and there are many other potential problems.

For me to give you much useful information, you'll need to give me enough information that I can almost experience the details of your problem just from what you write.  Here's a few things that might help:

1.  When the car wouldn't start, what *did* it do when you attempted to start it?  Did it crank?  If not, you need to start by checking your battery, alternator, and starter.

2.  If it did crank, did it crank normally, fast, or slow?

3.  How did you eventually get the car to start?

4.  When the car started, did it do anything differently than when it wouldn't start (other than running, obviously)?

5.  Did your car stop running while you were driving it or did it just not start when you got in?

I will say that nothing in your description leads me away from the battery.  If your battery is not properly charged or won't hold the proper charge, then you're likely to get some slow cranking symptoms as well as having computers that don't have the voltage to function properly.

Answer
If you're still not pumping gas, you'll need to examine a few things.  If this gets over your head, it's probably best to have the car towed to a good driveability repair facility.

Based on what you've said, it sounds like you aren't getting any fuel.

Is there fuel in the tank?  I know this sounds like a silly question, but it's possible the fuel gauge isn't working properly and the car ran out of gas without you knowing it.

Are you getting proper power and ground at the fuel pump?  The fuel pump is controlled by your ECM and obviously cannot pump if it isn't turned on.  If you don't have proper power/ground, you'll potentially need to check the fuel pump relay, the ignition switch, the wiring, and the computer.
