Hyundai Repair: Accent runs rough after rainstorm, fuel pressure regulator, heavy rainstorm

Question
I have a '95 Accent 1.5 L, 4 cyl 16V DOHC.  Recently while driving in a heavy rainstorm with flooded streets the car wanted to stall and check engine light started flashing.  I left the car overnight in the garage with the hood up hoping it would dry out, but the problem still persists after 10 days.

The car hesitates and seems to be misfiring, and also is putting out some black smoke.  What can I do to get my car running smoothly again?  Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for any insight you can provide.

Answer
The most common causes of missfires and rough running are the Plugs, wires and sometimes the coil pack. One more thing would be the fuel pressure regulator. To check the wires and coil, start the car and mist down the wires and coil with a spray bottle of water. This is better if done away from sunlight. If they are bad the car will start to run rough and you may see the spark jumping around. If you find that is the problem replace the plugs and wires and check it again. If it is gone then you should be ok, if not go after the coil pack. As far as the FPR goes, you will need to connect a vaccum pump to the regulator and check for gas leaking into the engine through the vaccum hose. This will cause hard starts and the black smoke you mentioned.
Good luck, Hope this helps
