Hyundai Repair: Fuel Gauge Readings and Exhaust Manifold, fuel level sensor, hyundai elantra

Question
I have a 2000 Hyundai Elantra which I bought used with a little over 58,000 miles on it. It nows has almost 65,000 miles on it.

Over the past two weeks my fuel gauge has been acting up. I first thought that I was just getting bad gas milage and should go in for a tune-up, but today when I was driving things really got weird. I filled my tank and only drove 39 miles in this time period my fuel gauge read that I had used a 1/4 tank, then went to F, back to a 1/5 tank, and so forth. Right now it reads that it is below the E line, but I deffinately still have gas in the tank (seeing as though I filled up). I have looked underneath the car and nothing seems to be leaking either. I'm not completely sure what the problem is and would like some assistance.

On a completely different note though I also have a problem with my exhaust manifold. When I had it lookd at last I was told it has a hole in it. I was also told that it could be welded, but when I called garages today to get estimates on this they said it could not be welded. If this is the case on average how much do you think a new exhaust manifold would cost?

Answer
I've got at least *some* good news, Jessica.  There's a recall on the exhaust manifold.  Write down your VIN (vehicle identification number).  You can find it on your vehicle registration or on the placard on the dash at the bottom of the driver's side of the windshield.  Then call your local Hyundai dealer and ask them to check your VIN for recalls.  If recall V04 is open, they will replace your cracked exhaust manifold for free.  If you have any problem with this, let me know.

As for the fuel gauge, you probably need a new fuel level sensor.  This is in the fuel tank (I believe attached to the fuel pump on this car).  It has contacts on it that wear (similar to just about any rheostat), and it sounds like the contacts sometimes make good contact and sometimes don't.  Just make sure you don't drive too far before filling your tank until you get this problem fixed.
